Potential first ladies: their passions and causes [Stephanie Herman]
A quick look at the activism and volunteer work done by Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain shows an illuminating contrast.
Obama has been active in minority causes; she participated in demonstrations in college for the hiring of more minority professors. She was the founding Executive Director for Public Allies Chicago, which prepares young people for public service. And she is also on the board of directors of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that, according to their website, is “committed to influencing the discourse on global issues through contributions to opinion and policy formation, leadership dialogue, and public learning.”
McCain, since college, has been committed to children with disabilities. She earned a masters in special education and taught children with Down syndrome. In addition, she founded the American Voluntary Medical Team, a non-profit organization that organized medical trips to third-world countries. McCain, herself, led 55 of these medical missions, and earned an award from “Food for the Hungry.”
McCain also serves on several boards, including 1) Operation Smile, a non-profit that repairs cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities - McCain has participated in its volunteer missions to Morocco, India, and Vietnam; 2) CARE, an organization that fights global poverty; and 3) Halo Trust, a non-profit organization that removes landmines - McCain has traveled to Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, and Angola in support of this organization.
